Since this is the first time I've used ActivePython I'm not sure if this' a robust solution for this problem. Therefore, I will leave this question open until I make sure this works. When I run gcc I get iapple-darwinllvm-gcc Although I haven't tried it myself, I believe this should work for all cases - since it's simply giving what the code is looking for. I would like to know, if anyone can explain, why the hell is this the case in Mountain Lion?

It is also important how they are packaged into the bundle you download whithin Xcode. It seems that the Makefile for Python 2.
Presumably this is hardcoded to the compiler that built the installed Python, rather than the system compiler. I detoured this problem by using ActivePython. I had no problem using this method for a month on two computers.

Configure step for gcc gave no errors. What is the complete path for where you tried to build gcc? What is the configure command line you used?

Typically those errors occur if MPFR does not work for various reasons. However, there seems to be a particular issue with MacOS.
This is not a GCC bug. Others have noted that there are known issues with MacOS Loin. Thanks, Jack.
I should've been more specific: I am using Xcode 4. I'll try recompiling mpfr, and maybe try configuring mpfr with --disable-thread-safe as Dominique suggested.
